6 Steps to Earn Your California Driver’s License

Getting your California driver’s license is a thrilling milestone, but it can feel like a complicated process. MM Traffic School simplifies it, offering a step-by-step guide to help you every step of the way—from completing driver’s Ed to earning your full driver’s license.

Step 1

Complete MM California Driver Ed Course

If you’re between 15 ½ and 17 ½ years old, state law requires you to complete a California DMV-licensed driver ed course before you can apply for your permit. Once you pass our online driver ed, we’ll send you your Certificate of Completion (Form OL 237) to bring to the DMV. This document is essential to take your written permit test.

Step 2

Know Your Behind-the-Wheel Training Requirements

After completing your driver ed course, you’ll need to enroll in a behind-the-wheel training program if you are between 15 ½ and 17 ½. Proof of this training (or enrollment) will be required when applying for your learner’s permit.

Step 3

Earn Your California Learner’s Permit

To get your learner’s permit, you must bring a completed DL 44 form, your Certificate of Completion (Form OL 237), proof of behind-the-wheel training, and identity documents to the DMV. You’ll also need to pass the written permit test (46 questions, with at least 38 correct answers), the vision exam, and pay the application fee. You’re entitled to three attempts to pass the written test within 12 months.

Step 4

Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training

To move forward, California requires at least 6 hours of professional driving instruction with a licensed instructor. Once this is done, you can begin practicing with your parent or legal guardian.

Step 5

Practice Driving with Supervision

Now it’s time to practice! California law requires 50 hours of supervised driving (10 of which must be at night) with your parent or legal guardian before applying for your license. The more time you spend behind the wheel, the more comfortable and prepared you’ll be for your driving test.

Step 6

Apply for Your California Driver’s License

Once you’ve held your permit for at least 6 months and completed all required training, you’re ready to apply for your California driver’s license at the DMV. Be sure to bring proof of your completed driver’s ed, behind-the-wheel training, and permit, along with additional identification documents like proof of vehicle registration and insurance.

Provisional California Driver’s License Restrictions

When you first get your license, it will be provisional until you turn 18. During the first year, there are a few restrictions:
Violations of these rules can result in fines, community service, or restrictions on your license. Maintaining a clean driving record will allow you to receive your unrestricted license when you turn 18 without returning to the DMV.
